Whitewater:

Shenandoah River

Description:

This section has a great range of whitewater personalities. At low water (during most of the summer), it is a good beginner/family run. At medium water level, it is an intermediate playground with many different surfing opportunities. At high water it is considered one of the best playboating spots in the east. Class II-III (at low to med. levels). 7 miles. Commercial outfitters offer trips on this section.

Directions:

The take-out is at the Potomac Wayside Park (parking is limited and the area is crowded on the weekends, so an alternative take-out is 3 miles downstream at the Brunswick, MD boat ramp). To get to the put-in (Google Directions below), go west on US 340 for 5 miles to CR 23 on the left. Go to the end of this rd. and park either at commercial company lots for a fee or at the public put-in near the dam.
