Canaan Valley Area
Canaan Valley is a the largest high elevation valley east of the Mississippi River. There are two state parks, one national wildlife refuge and around 40,000 acres of national forest wilderness and backcountry areas either within or surrounding the valley. Snowfall in the winter averages around 160” and the temperatures in summer rarely go above 85 degrees.
With all of these attributes, it is no wonder that a tremendous number of outdoor activities exist in and around Canaan Valley. The winter season is the most popular time for people to visit the area to take part in downhill skiing at Canaan Valley Resort and Timberline Resort as well as cross country skiing at Whitegrass and Blackwater Falls State Park.
The spring, summer and fall, however bring warmer weather and opportunities to take part in mountain biking (Blackwater Falls State Park Area, Canaan Valley SP, Canaan Mountain), backpacking (Canaan Mountain, Roaring Plains, Dolly Sods), camping (Blackwater Falls, Canaan Valley SP, and Red Creek), and hiking (Blackwater Falls, Canaan Valley SP, Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Canaan Mtn, Roaring Plains and Dolly Sods).
