Canoeing:

Big Coal River

Description:

The Big Coal River is a section along with the Little Coal and the Coal River that have had a great deal of energy put into creating a water trail. This includes communicating about public access sites as well as potential canoe trips. The Water Trail website (linked below) is a great resource. The Big Coal River flows through the hills of southern WV and includes about 40 miles of A1 water from Whitesville to the Little Coal River. There are nine put-in/take-out locations along the river that allow for as many as nine different day trips varying in length from one to thirteen miles. John Slack Park does have camping options to make an overnight river trip possible.

Directions:

The Whitesville put-in is at the intersection of State Rt. 3 (Coal River Rd) and Raleigh St (Google directions below). The other put-in and take-out locations exist along Coal River Rd. or County Rt. 1.
