Whitewater:

New River (Thurmond to Cunard)

Description:

This is the largest volume whitewater river in the state. It usually runs in the summer unless it is very dry. This section includes a good bit of flat water and about five class II rapids along with Surprise Rapid, a class III hole.  During higher water, this section is run in conjunction with the Gorge section. Many  commercial outfitters offer trips on this section as well as other river sections on the New. Class I-III. 9.4 miles.

Directions:

From Fayetteville on Rt. 16, Veer left onto CR 9 for over 6 miles to Cunard. After Cunard, go left (sign to river access) and down into the gorge to the take-out (parking and facilities – bathroom and changing hut).  The put-in shuttle for this section is long - 40 minutes out to Rt. 19 and south from Oak Hill to Thurmond(Google Directions below). Put-In: 37.954102,-81.077377    Take-Out: 37.999569,-81.022118
