New River (McCreery to Thurmond)

This is the largest volume whitewater river in the state. It usually runs in the summer unless it is very dry. This section is a good beginner whitewater run that has a few features to navigate, but a lot of space to stay away from hazards you are not comfortable with.  It is a great float fish section and can be done in conjunction with other New River sections as an overnight trip (see campsite link below).  Many  commercial outfitters offer trips on this section as well as other river sections on the New. Class II-III. 15 miles.

South of Oak Hill, WV , exit Rt. 19 onto WV Rt. 16, and then Thurmond Rd for just over 6 miles to the river. Thurmond Put-In includes parking and facilities – bathroom and changing hut.  The put-in shuttle for this section is l30 minutes out to Rt. 19 and south to McCreery (Google Directions below).   Put-In: 37.849216,-81.091682     Take-Out: 37.954102,-81.077377
